Fury: The Tank Museum’s Sherman at Tankfest

Fury, the Sherman tank from the 2014 film, moving across the arena at Tankfest, Bovington, with infantry in US Army Second World War style uniform advancing alongside it.

Fury is the Tank Museum’s M4A2E8 Sherman, serial number 65016, built at the Fisher Tank Arsenal in Michigan in March 1945. It is believed to be one of five M4A2E8s supplied to the British during the war. The museum acquired it from the Royal Military College of Science at Shrivenham in 1985, and for years it took part in the museum’s demonstrations.

The A2 in the designation refers to its General Motors engine, and the E8 to its horizontal volute spring suspension, nicknamed Easy Eight. It carries a 76mm gun and weighs about 33 tons. For the 2014 film Fury it was altered cosmetically to look like the more common M4A3E8, because the US Army did not use M4A2E8s in north-west Europe.
