Battle of Britain Day 86 Years On

Fifteenth September, 1940. RAF Fighter Command scrambled everything it had against the Luftwaffe’s largest daylight raid of the war — and won. It became the day the Battle of Britain turned, and the day Britain has marked every year since.

Today marks the 86th anniversary. This line-up of six Spitfires and a Hurricane at Duxford brings together the two aircraft that carried that summer — the Hurricane doing the heavier lifting against the bomber formations, the Spitfire taking on the fighter escorts. Together they accounted for the vast majority of the RAF’s victories in the battle.

Eighty-six years on, they’re still flying — and still drawing a crowd every time they take to the air at Duxford.
