On 24 September 1949, the XT-28 prototype made its first flight — North American’s answer to the search for a replacement for the wartime T-6 Texan, known to the RAF as the Harvard. Almost 2,000 Trojans were built, training a generation of US Air Force and US Navy pilots through the 1950s and 60s, with the Navy’s versions fitted with the big Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial. Armed T-28s later flew counter-insurgency missions over Laos and South Vietnam.
77 years on today, the Trojan is still a familiar sight on the warbird circuit — this one photographed taxiing past the crowd at IWM Duxford.
